Every Saturday morning, rain or shine, you'd find us—a band of brothers—hitting the pavement for our routine jog. Whether Dad was leading the pack or not, the camaraderie was always there.
But jogging wasn’t the only tradition we formed. My dad, always on the lookout for ways to boost our health, stumbled upon a habit that would stick with me for decades—the morning water ritual. What started as a post-jog challenge to see who could chug water the fastest soon became an integral part of our day, way beyond just hydration.
Within 20-30 minutes of drinking our water, we'd feel its effects. This simple ritual became a daily must. For over two decades now, I’ve started my mornings with a refreshing glass of water, and I continue to reap the benefits.
For us busy physicians balancing work and family—finding simple, effective habits like this can make all the difference. I know firsthand how hard it can be to juggle fitness goals, a hectic schedule, and maintaining your health, but something as basic as a morning hydration routine can set a positive tone for your day.
Here are a few reasons why it works:
1. Replenishes Fluids: After a long night’s rest, your body needs hydration to kickstart the day—especially when you have a full day ahead.
2. Boosts Energy: Hydration in the morning can help combat that morning sluggishness. No need for endless cups of coffee; water might do the trick.
3. Jumpstarts Metabolism: Starting the day hydrated can help stimulate digestion and keep your metabolism running efficiently, something that’s especially important for those looking to shed that Dad Bod.
4. Supports Cognitive Function: Staying hydrated boosts brain function, helping you stay focused through rounds, meetings, or even a long day with the family.
5. Promotes Longevity: Regular hydration supports your overall well-being and helps regulate everything from digestion to energy levels.
As busy professionals, we sometimes overlook the little things, like hydration, when juggling responsibilities. But trust me, starting your day with a simple morning water ritual can have a lasting impact on your health—both physical and mental.
So whether you’re heading out for a jog, prepping for a long shift, or about to tackle family life, don’t forget to raise a glass to your health. That small step can lead to lasting change—just like it did for me.
